Biotechnology: Strategies for Agricultural Development

India needs to frame important strategies for agricultural development through biotechnology; which will offer new opportunities for increased sustainability, profitability and international competitiveness in agriculture.
Six research areas are:-

GENE TRANSFER TO ENHANCE AGRICULTURE
Gene identification :- Locating and identifying agriculturally important genes and creating chromosome maps.

Gene regulation     :- Understanding the mechanisms of regulation and expression of these genes and refining
the methods by which they may be genetically engineered.

Structure and function of gene products :- Understanding the structure and function of gene products in              metabolism and the development of agriculturally important traits, specially.Genetically modified organisms(GMO).

TISSUE CULTURE TECHNIQUES
Cellular techniques:- Developing and refining techniques for cell culture, cell fusion, regeneration of plants and    other manipulations of plant and animal cells and embryos.

ENVIRONMENTAL BIOTECHNOLOGY
Developing in organisms and communities :- Understanding the complex physiological and genetic interactions   and associations that occur within an organisms and between organisms.

Environmental considerations :- Understanding the behavior and effect of genetically engineered organisms in   the environment.
